After School Career and Budget
Part 1
Part 1
- Go to Google Classroom to open the "After School Career and Budget" assignment.
- Used the Holland Occupational Themes survey on the Kentucky Virtual Campus site to research your career interests.
- From your survey results select a career that you would like to research. Enter the career name in cell C4 of your spreadsheet.
- Select a city you would like to live in when you start your career. Enter the name of your chosen city in cell C5.
- Use Google to research the number of years of education needed to enter your chosen career field and schools that offer this program. Enter your selected school in cell C7. Enter the number of years in cell C6.
- Enter the annual education cost for your selected school in cell C8.
- Click on Row 9 to select the whole row. Click "Insert" and "Row Above." This will give you an extra row for some new information we will be adding. In cell A9 type "Total Education Cost."
- In cell C9 enter "=C8*C6" This will give you your Cost of Education for the career you are planning to pursue.
- Let's work on the assumption you have 50% of your education paid for through savings, grants, scholarships, etc. This leaves you with 50% to pay for with student loans. So, type "=c9*.50" in cell C10. This will give you your total student debt at graduation.
- Enter 10 in cell C11. This will be the number of years you need to pay off your student loans. We will use this later.
- Use Google to research the average starting salary for your chosen career in your chosen city. Enter your average starting salary in cell C12.
- In cell C13 enter "=C12*.75"

- Determine the cost for purchasing a home to add to your spreadsheet. Research home cost for your desired area via zillow.com. Use the Monthly Payment calculator to determine a monthly payment for your prefered house. Be sure to include the estimated tax and insurance. Enter your total in cell C16. See video 2 below for a demonstration of this step.
- Enter 200 in cell C17, 125 in cell C18, 50 in cell C19, 50 in cell C20. These are just rough estimates for these expenses.
- Use a loan calculator template in Google Sheets to calculate your monthly student loan payment with 5% interest. This is available through "Add-ons." Enter the monthly payment amount into cell C21. See video 3 below for a demonstration of this step.
- Enter 200 in cell C25 and 75 in cell C26. These are rough estimates for these amounts as well.
- Use carmax.com to shop for a vehicle in your desired city. Use the Estimate Payment link to determine your monthly car payment with 3% interest. Enter this amount in cell C30.
- Enter 100 in cell C31, 175 in cell C32, and 75 in cell C33. Again, these are rough estimates.

- In cell C41 type =C13/12.
- In cell C22 type =SUM(C16:C21) or use the function icon to create the same formula.
- In cell C27 type =SUM(C25:C26) or use the function icon to create the same formula.
- In cell C34 type =SUM(C30:C33) or use the function icon to create the same formula.
- In cell C37 type =C41*0.05.
- In cell C39 type =C22+C27+C34+C37.
- In cell C43 type =C41-C39.
- In cell D16 type =C16/$C$39. The first cell reference is called a relative cell reference. The second is called an absolute cell reference.
- Use autofill to copy this formula into cells D17 - D22. Notice the first cell reference changes, but the second one does not.
- Copy the formula from cell D22 and past it in cell D25.
- Use autofill to copy this formula into cells D26 - D27.
- Copy the formula from cell D27 and past it in cell D30.
- Use autofill to copy this formula into cells D31 - D34.
- Copy the formula from cell D34 and past it in cell D37.
- In cell E16 type =C16/$C$41.
- Use autofill to copy this formula into cells E17 - E22.
- Copy the formula from cell E22 and past it in cell E25.
- Use autofill to copy this formula into cells E26 - E27.
- Copy the formula from cell E27 and past it in cell E30.
- Use autofill to copy this formula into cells E31 - E34.
- Copy the formula from cell E34 and past it in cell E37.
