Digital Bytes: Copy-Paste Culture
What's the difference between being inspired by others' creative work and copying others' creative ideas? What crosses the line legally? How about ethically? Using the Common Sense Media Digital Bytes site, you will spend the next three weeks exploring these questions. This is a multi-part assignment with a collaborative project at the end. Below the large four-colored circle you will see four black rectangles with category names on them. Point at the rectangle that says "Innovation." From the two choices that pop up, choose "Copy-Paste Culture." There are five steps to this byte: 1. Reflect, 2. Watch, 3. Discuss, 4. Engage, 5. Share.
1. Reflect
- Watch the 2:24 video. Check out the vocabulary pull-tab on the left-hand side of the screen.
- Pick one of the three questions below the video to answer. Do this individually. Type your answer in the space provided.
- Once you finish your answer, use the print button to save your answer to your download file as a PDF file. Mr. Longard will show you how to turn it in later.
- Once you're saved your answer, click Continue.
2. Watch either Video A or B to prepare for the discussion questions.
3. Discuss
- Get the discussion question sheet for your video from Mr. Longard.
- Make sure you write all team members names at the top of the sheet.
- Discuss the questions and write a discussion a summary answer on your sheet of paper.
- Once you have finished the questions, hand your sheet in to Mr. Longard.
- Click the Continue button.
4. Engage
- Get an "Action Plan" sheet from Mr. Longard. Use this as an organizing tool for your team (It is not graded).
- Pick either Activity A or B on the Digital Bytes site to complete.
- Using the prompt on the web site, develop an action plan for your team project.
- You can use any of the free tools mentioned on the right to create your project. The preferred tools are either Prezi or Google Slides.
- Once you are finished with your project, attach it to this assignment on Google Classroom to turn it in.
- Get a copy of the "Self-reflection" sheet from Mr. Longard. Fill this out individually and turn it in.
