Making Outlines in Google Docs
We are using Google Docs to make an outline of the top three states ranked by different categories. This is a tool you can use in any subject or project to organize your thoughts. Open the outline template in Google Classroom and follow the steps below.

- Replace "Your Name" with your actual name.
- Replace "Your Teacher" with "Mr. Longard."
- Replace "Date" with "September 8, 2015."
- Replace "Title" with "Top Three States."
- Center the title.
- Change to title format to "Title."
- Press [Enter] twice.
- Click the Numbered List icon. This marks your first main point.
- For the first main point type "By Land Area." Press [Enter]
- Click this link to look up your information. This is your source document.
- Press the [Tab] key. This will change the number to a letter. This is a sub-point.
- On your source document find the first three states listed by land area. List them in order on your outline with each state being a new line. Press [Enter] between each line.
- After the third state, press [Enter]. Then hold down the [Shift] key and press the [Tab] key. This moves your cursor back to mark your second main point.
- For the second main point type "By Water Area." Press [Enter]
- Use the previous Wikipedia page as your source document again. Click "sq mi" under "Water" twice until the list is rearranged in order from most to least water area.
- Press the [Tab] key. This will change the number to a letter. This is a sub-point.
- On your source document find the first three states listed by water area. List them in order on your outline with each state being a new line. Press [Enter] between each line.
- After the third state, press [Enter]. Then hold down the [Shift] key and press the [Tab] key. This moves your cursor back to mark your third main point.
- For the third main point type "By Population" Press [Enter]
- Click this link to look up your information. This is your source document.
- Press the [Tab] key. This will change the number to a letter. This is a sub-point.

- Once you have finished you can close your document and turn it is by clicking "Turn In" in Google Classroom.

- Open the "Formatting" file Google Classroom.
- Fill in the heading.
- Move it to the right margin. Use the Right Alignment Icon, NOT the space bar or tab key.
- The red-highlighted phrase is your title. Center this phrase and change the style to Title. Remove the highlight when you have finished.
- Correct misspelled words using suggestions when you right click on the word. These words have a squiggly red line under it.
- Use “Define Tool” to find a synonym for the yellow-highlighted words. Remove the highlights when you are finished.
- The three green-highlight phrases in your document are your section headings. Change the style to Heading 1. Remove the highlights when you have finished.
- For the six blue-highlighted phrases, change the FONT, the SIZE, and the COLOR. You are free to pick whichever FONT, SIZE, and COLOR you like. They do not have to be the same. Remove the highlights when you have finished.
- Insert three pictures: 1 of a corn maze, 1 of a haunted house, and 1 of a pumpkin patch. Use the search feature on the "Insert" "Image" menu. Change each picture so that the text wraps around it and place in an appropriate spot for the story.
- When you are all finished, click Turn-in.
